BSc, MSc(hons), PhD

  • Stu's fascination for all things weather and climate began at the age of 10. The once hobby gained momentum through the teenage years, leading to the completion of a BSc at Victoria University in 1991, an MSc (Hons) at Victoria University in 2000, and a PhD from the Department of Atmospheric Research the University of Canterbury in 2014. While Stu’s climate interests are varied, specific research interests embrace the evolution of the nocturnal boundary layer in complex terrain and the prediction of near-surface minimum temperature in complex terrain and local scale climate studies of nocturnal boundary layer processes.

Stu founded an earlier company called Microclimate New Zealand in June 2002 and managed the business until 2009. Stu formed Climate Consulting Limited, trading as FrostConsult™, in 2005 and initially provided frost forecasts to the Marlborough and Waipara wine growing regions in New Zealand. The company has now expanded over the years to encompass a range of climate services, in particular the provision of site-specific frost protection advice to Orchards and Vineyards in Australia and New Zealand.

  • James has been passionate about weather and climate from a young age so it was no surprise that he started observing and recording the weather around Wellington as a teenager. This lifelong obsession with the weather has led to a career in writing forecasts and studying the climate of New Zealand and the world. James has a particular interest in temperature variation and global climate history with specialised focus on frost forecasting.

In 2022 James joined the FrostConsult™ team and now works as a Weather & Climate Analyst providing advice to Vineyards and Orchards across Australia and New Zealand.
